Safarnama began as one antique-filled house near Dashashwamedh Ghat, five minutes' walk from the temple bells and the boats. It was built on a simple idea: give travellers somewhere calm to return to after a day spent in the middle of everything.

Kaas followed in the posher quiet of Mahmoorganj — the same care, a more contemporary hand. Together the two houses, and the cafe between them, are how we host Varanasi now.
